Dug Into the Roots and Customs

 

    Every 2nd of February is when the Kannawidan Festival is annually celebrated to recognize the founding anniversary of the region, Ilocos Sur. But, what does the word 'Kannawidan' exactly mean? According to festival scape, it comes from the word 'tawid' which means tradition, legacy, and/or heritage. This celebration is deeply significant for Ilocos Sur because it unites the people as they culturally celebrate their unique identity.






    The Kannawidan Festival fosters unity among its people because they collectively promote the celebration. They showcase their traditional music, dance, and art throughout the festival while sharing a sense of pride and belonging. Pas they highlight their distinct identity, visitors and locals also collectively come together to participate in the activities that the celebration packs to honor its values and history. So, it preserves the old traditions by encouraging collaboration and solidarity within the community because people work together to participate in and organize the packed events. The festival strengthens their identity as they get reminded of their roots every year. 



    In conclusion, people will always be reminded of their roots because of the Kannawidan Festival. Every year, they collectively celebrate the festival that commemorates the founding of Ilocos Sur. And so, they have the opportunity every year to unite and share their cultures and traditions.
